What is Material 43?

Material 43 is a general-purpose Ni-Zn ferrite grade effective from roughly 25 to 300 MHz and is one of the most widely used EMI-suppression bead and clamp materials in the industry. It is supplied sintered, extruded or in 44HR condition as beads, sleeves, split clamp halves and toroids, with a density of 4.75 g/cm3. Maximum service temperature is 125 C, lower than Material 61, and the fired ceramic is brittle with a machinability score of 8. Choose Material 61 when suppression is needed below about 25 MHz or when a 200 C rating is required. Material 43 has a density of 4.75 g/cm³ (0.172 lb/in³), lighter than 54% of ceramic grades. It melts at 1,550°C (2,822 °F). Material 43 has a tensile strength of 30 MPa (4.35 ksi), weaker than 77% of ceramic grades. The elastic modulus is 130 GPa (18.9 Msi).

What is Material 43 used for?

  • EMI suppression clamps/beads
  • cable ferrites
  • broadband chokes

Advantages

  • Low embodied carbon — 4.5 kg CO₂/kg, better than 78% of ceramic grades

Limitations

  • Limited service temperature — 125°C (257 °F), worse than 94% of ceramic grades
  • Hard to polish — 60/100, worse than 79% of ceramic grades
  • Needs corrosion protection — 55/100, worse than 77% of ceramic grades

Working with Material 43

Is Material 43 easy to machine?

Sintered ferrite is hard and brittle — only diamond wheel grinding, slicing or lapping; never drill or turn with carbide.

Can Material 43 be welded?

Not weldable; join by adhesive bonding (epoxy/cyanoacrylate) or by clamping in plastic snap housings.

Can Material 43 be formed, bent or molded?

Net-shape by dry uniaxial pressing or extrusion of granulated oxide powder, then air sintering near 1200–1300 °C with ~15–20 % linear shrinkage.
