Working with Pure Pd-H02

Is Pure Pd easy to machine?

Soft and gummy — use sharp, high-rake carbide or diamond tools, light depths, high speed and copious lubrication; collect all swarf for refining.

Can Pure Pd be welded?

Resistance, laser and micro-TIG weld readily in inert gas; strictly avoid hydrogen-bearing atmospheres and sulphur/lead contamination which embrittle the metal.

Can Pure Pd be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent cold formability in the annealed temper (deep drawing, coining, fine wire drawing); anneal at 800–1000 °C in inert or slightly oxidising atmosphere between heavy reductions.

What surface finishes work on Pure Pd?

Takes a bright mirror polish that does not tarnish; often used as a plated or clad contact layer itself, and can be electroplated with Au flash to suppress frictional polymer film formation.

Pure Pd-H02 — frequently asked

What is Pure Pd-H02 used for?

Pure Pd-H02 is typically used for reed relay contacts, precision telecom switch contacts and electroplating anodes. In short: tarnish-free noble contact; highest formability in family; soft, hydrogen-sensitive metal.

What is the yield strength of Pure Pd-H02?

Pure Pd-H02 has a typical yield strength of 215 MPa (31.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) — stronger than 64% of precious metal grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is Pure Pd-H02 easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (48/100, better than 71% of precious metal grades). Soft and gummy — use sharp, high-rake carbide or diamond tools, light depths, high speed and copious lubrication; collect all swarf for refining.

Can Pure Pd-H02 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (80/100). Resistance, laser and micro-TIG weld readily in inert gas; strictly avoid hydrogen-bearing atmospheres and sulphur/lead contamination which embrittle the metal.

What surface finishes work on Pure Pd-H02?

Takes a bright mirror polish that does not tarnish; often used as a plated or clad contact layer itself, and can be electroplated with Au flash to suppress frictional polymer film formation.

Can Pure Pd-H02 be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent cold formability in the annealed temper (deep drawing, coining, fine wire drawing); anneal at 800–1000 °C in inert or slightly oxidising atmosphere between heavy reductions.

What is the maximum service temperature of Pure Pd-H02?

Pure Pd-H02 is rated for continuous use to about 250°C (482 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between Pure Pd-O and Pure Pd-H04?

O is the default condition — choose for deep drawing, bending, wire bonding and clad/bimetal contact rivets where maximum ductility is needed. H04: choose for maximum hardness, wear resistance and spring force in sliding contacts, brushes and probe wire; very limited bending. Yield strength is 55 MPa in O versus 300 MPa in H04.
