What is MB8?

MB8 is a sheet-grade wrought magnesium alloy in the AZ31C class, supplied in M, R, Y2, Y, extruded and forged conditions for thin-gauge formed and welded components. Engineers select it for enclosures and stampings that need warm forming (formability score 45) and dependable arc welding, with a service ceiling near 200 °C. Strength is modest at 140 MPa yield, 240 MPa tensile, 18 % elongation and 50 HB, and bare surfaces require a conversion coating and paint. MB2 (AZ31B) is the nearest equivalent sheet product. MB8 has a density of 1.78 g/cm³ (0.0643 lb/in³), lighter than 78% of magnesium alloy grades. It melts at 645°C (1,193 °F). MB8 has a yield strength of 140 MPa (20.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) — weaker than 61% of magnesium alloy grades. Elongation at break is 18% and the elastic modulus is 45 GPa (6.53 Msi).

Chemical Resistance SummaryGood in dry air, alkalis, most organic solvents and fuels; rapidly attacked by salt water, acids and moist Cl⁻/SO₄²⁻ environments; galvanic contact with steel, Cu or graphite must be insulated. Free of Al, so no Al-related SCC in chloride, but chromate/phosphate conversion or MAO coating is mandatory outdoors.

Working with MB8

Is MB8 easy to machine?

Extremely free-cutting with high speeds, sharp positive-rake tools and no water-based coolant on fine chips; collect and control swarf as it is a fire hazard.

Can MB8 be welded?

Excellent TIG/MIG weldability with AZ61/AZ92 or matching Mg-Mn filler under argon; being Al-free it needs no post-weld stress-relief against chloride SCC.

Can MB8 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forming is limited by the HCP structure — bend, draw and stretch at 250–350 °C with heated tooling, then air cool.
