Steel Y35-HR vs Y35-IH

Steel · Y35 temper comparison

Y35-HR and Y35-IH are two conditions of the same steel grade, Y35: HR (hot rolled) versus IH (induction hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. Y35-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 720 MPa (104 ksi) against 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) for Y35-HR, about 112% more; tensile strength follows at 900 MPa (131 ksi) vs 570 MPa (82.7 ksi). In exchange, Y35-HR is the more ductile: elongation 18% versus 15% for Y35-IH, and Y35-IH is harder (510 HB vs 175 HB). Y35-HR runs hotter in service (350°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, Y35-HR machines more easily (very good vs poor) and Y35-HR welds better (poor vs not recommended).

Y35-HR vs Y35-IH — frequently asked

Is Y35-IH stronger than Y35-HR?

Yes. Y35-IH has a typical yield strength of 720 MPa (104 ksi) against 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) for Y35-HR — about 112% more. Tensile strength is 900 MPa (131 ksi) vs 570 MPa (82.7 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or IH?

CD is the default Y35 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither HR nor IH). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, Y35-HR or Y35-IH?

Y35-HR. Its machinability rates very good (72/100) against poor (25/100) for Y35-IH; for welding the order is Y35-HR first (poor, 22/100) then Y35-IH (not recommended, 8/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in Y35-HR and Y35-IH side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
