Steel SUP13-A vs SUP13-CD

Steel · SUP13 temper comparison

SUP13-A and SUP13-CD are two conditions of the same steel grade, SUP13: A (solution annealed) versus CD (cold drawn). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. SUP13-CD is the stronger of the two: yield strength 900 MPa (131 ksi) against 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) for SUP13-A, about 80% more; tensile strength follows at 1,050 MPa (152 ksi) vs 800 MPa (116 ksi). In exchange, SUP13-A is the more ductile: elongation 18% versus 8% for SUP13-CD, and SUP13-CD is harder (310 HB vs 230 HB). SUP13-A runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, SUP13-A machines more easily (fair vs poor).

SUP13-A vs SUP13-CD — frequently asked

Is SUP13-CD stronger than SUP13-A?

Yes. SUP13-CD has a typical yield strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi) against 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) for SUP13-A — about 80% more. Tensile strength is 1,050 MPa (152 ksi) vs 800 MPa (116 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, A or CD?

QT 44-48 HRC is the default SUP13 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither A nor CD). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, SUP13-A or SUP13-CD?

SUP13-A. Its machinability rates fair (45/100) against poor (33/100) for SUP13-CD; for welding the order is SUP13-A first (poor, 25/100) then SUP13-CD (poor, 18/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in SUP13-A and SUP13-CD side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
