Steel Nitralloy N-N vs Nitralloy N Nitrided
Steel · Nitralloy N temper comparison
Nitralloy N-N and Nitralloy N Nitrided are two conditions of the same steel grade, Nitralloy N: N (normalized) versus Nitrided. The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. Nitralloy N Nitrided is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,100 MPa (160 ksi) against 650 MPa (94.3 ksi) for Nitralloy N-N, about 69% more; tensile strength follows at 1,250 MPa (181 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi). In exchange, Nitralloy N-N is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 13% for Nitralloy N Nitrided, and Nitralloy N Nitrided is harder (311 HB vs 269 HB). Nitralloy N Nitrided runs hotter in service (500°C vs 450°C continuous). On the shop floor, Nitralloy N-N machines more easily (fair vs not recommended).
Nitralloy N-NChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.
Nitralloy N NitridedChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
Nitralloy N-N vs Nitralloy N Nitrided: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

Nitralloy N-N vs Nitralloy N Nitrided — frequently asked
Is Nitralloy N Nitrided stronger than Nitralloy N-N?
Yes. Nitralloy N Nitrided has a typical yield strength of 1,100 MPa (160 ksi) against 650 MPa (94.3 ksi) for Nitralloy N-N — about 69% more. Tensile strength is 1,250 MPa (181 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, N or Nitrided?
QT30-36HRC is the default Nitralloy N condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither N nor Nitrided). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, Nitralloy N-N or Nitralloy N Nitrided?
Nitralloy N-N. Its machinability rates fair (46/100) against not recommended (8/100) for Nitralloy N Nitrided.
