Steel F1-ANN vs F1-N

Steel · F1 temper comparison

F1-ANN and F1-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, F1: ANN (annealed) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. F1-N is the stronger of the two: yield strength 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) against 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) for F1-ANN, about 24% more; tensile strength follows at 900 MPa (131 ksi) vs 700 MPa (102 ksi). In exchange, F1-ANN is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 10% for F1-N, and F1-N is harder (285 HB vs 197 HB). F1-ANN runs hotter in service (300°C vs 250°C continuous). On the shop floor, F1-ANN machines more easily (good vs fair).

F1-ANN vs F1-N — frequently asked

Is F1-N stronger than F1-ANN?

Yes. F1-N has a typical yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) against 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) for F1-ANN — about 24% more. Tensile strength is 900 MPa (131 ksi) vs 700 MPa (102 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, ANN or N?

ANN is the default F1 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, F1-ANN or F1-N?

F1-ANN. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against fair (42/100) for F1-N.
