Steel F1 HT-60 vs F1-N

Steel · F1 temper comparison

F1 HT-60 and F1-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, F1: HT-60 (hardened & Tempered 205 °C) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. F1 HT-60 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,750 MPa (254 ksi) against 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) for F1-N, about 3.4 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,050 MPa (297 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi). In exchange, F1-N is the more ductile: elongation 10% versus 2% for F1 HT-60, and F1-N is harder (285 HB vs 197 HB). F1-N runs hotter in service (250°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, F1-N machines more easily (fair vs not recommended).

F1 HT-60 vs F1-N — frequently asked

Is F1 HT-60 stronger than F1-N?

Yes. F1 HT-60 has a typical yield strength of 1,750 MPa (254 ksi) against 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) for F1-N — about 3.4 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,050 MPa (297 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HT-60 or N?

ANN is the default F1 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither HT-60 nor N). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, F1 HT-60 or F1-N?

F1-N. Its machinability rates fair (42/100) against not recommended (10/100) for F1 HT-60.

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in F1 HT-60 and F1-N side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
