Steel F1-ANN vs F1-CH

Steel · F1 temper comparison

F1-ANN and F1-CH are two conditions of the same steel grade, F1: ANN (annealed) versus CH (carburized and hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. F1-CH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) against 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) for F1-ANN, about 138% more; tensile strength follows at 1,200 MPa (174 ksi) vs 700 MPa (102 ksi). In exchange, F1-ANN is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 2% for F1-CH, and F1-CH is harder (750 HV vs 207 HV). F1-ANN runs hotter in service (300°C vs 200°C continuous) and F1-ANN conducts heat better (44 W/m·K vs 34 W/m·K). On the shop floor, F1-ANN machines more easily (good vs not recommended).

F1-ANN vs F1-CH — frequently asked

Is F1-CH stronger than F1-ANN?

Yes. F1-CH has a typical yield strength of 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) against 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) for F1-ANN — about 138% more. Tensile strength is 1,200 MPa (174 ksi) vs 700 MPa (102 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, ANN or CH?

ANN is the default F1 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, F1-ANN or F1-CH?

F1-ANN. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against not recommended (10/100) for F1-CH; for welding the order is F1-ANN first (not recommended, 12/100) then F1-CH (not recommended, 3/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in F1-ANN and F1-CH side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
