Steel D5-ANN vs D5 HT-CRYO

Steel · D5 temper comparison

D5-ANN and D5 HT-CRYO are two conditions of the same steel grade, D5: ANN (annealed) versus HT-CRYO (hardened + deep cryogenic + double temper, 61–63 HRC). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. D5 HT-CRYO is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,900 MPa (276 ksi) against 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) for D5-ANN, about 4.2 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,050 MPa (297 ksi) vs 760 MPa (110 ksi). In exchange, D5-ANN is the more ductile: elongation 14% versus 1% for D5 HT-CRYO, and D5 HT-CRYO is harder (650 HB vs 235 HB). D5 HT-CRYO runs hotter in service (425°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, D5-ANN machines more easily (poor vs not recommended) and D5-ANN welds better (poor vs not recommended).

D5-ANNChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.

D5 HT-CRYOChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.

D5-ANN vs D5 HT-CRYO — frequently asked

Is D5 HT-CRYO stronger than D5-ANN?

Yes. D5 HT-CRYO has a typical yield strength of 1,900 MPa (276 ksi) against 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) for D5-ANN — about 4.2 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,050 MPa (297 ksi) vs 760 MPa (110 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, ANN or HT-CRYO?

ANN is the default D5 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, D5-ANN or D5 HT-CRYO?

D5-ANN. Its machinability rates poor (30/100) against not recommended (4/100) for D5 HT-CRYO; for welding the order is D5-ANN first (poor, 18/100) then D5 HT-CRYO (not recommended, 5/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in D5-ANN and D5 HT-CRYO side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
