Steel C30-HR vs C30-IH

Steel · C30 temper comparison

C30-HR and C30-IH are two conditions of the same steel grade, C30: HR (hot rolled) versus IH (induction hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C30-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 360 MPa (52.2 ksi) against 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) for C30-HR, about 38% more; tensile strength follows at 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) vs 470 MPa (68.2 ksi). C30-IH is harder — 520 HB against 137 HB for C30-HR — which matters for wear surfaces and threads. C30-HR runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, C30-HR machines more easily (good vs poor), C30-HR welds better (good vs poor), and C30-HR forms better (good vs not recommended).

C30-IHChoose it when strength drives the design, or when surface hardness matters.

C30-HR vs C30-IH — frequently asked

Is C30-IH stronger than C30-HR?

Yes. C30-IH has a typical yield strength of 360 MPa (52.2 ksi) against 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) for C30-HR — about 38% more. Tensile strength is 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) vs 470 MPa (68.2 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or IH?

N is the default C30 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither HR nor IH). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, C30-HR or C30-IH?

C30-HR. Its machinability rates good (58/100) against poor (20/100) for C30-IH; for welding the order is C30-HR first (good, 68/100) then C30-IH (poor, 25/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in C30-HR and C30-IH side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
