Steel C30-A vs C30-IH

Steel · C30 temper comparison

C30-A and C30-IH are two conditions of the same steel grade, C30: A (solution annealed) versus IH (induction hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C30-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 360 MPa (52.2 ksi) against 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) for C30-A, about 6% more; tensile strength follows at 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) vs 465 MPa (67.4 ksi). In exchange, C30-A is the more ductile: elongation 31% versus 22% for C30-IH, and C30-IH is harder (520 HB vs 126 HB). C30-A runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, C30-A machines more easily (good vs poor) and C30-A welds better (good vs poor).

C30-AChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

C30-A vs C30-IH — frequently asked

Is C30-IH stronger than C30-A?

Yes. C30-IH has a typical yield strength of 360 MPa (52.2 ksi) against 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) for C30-A — about 6% more. Tensile strength is 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) vs 465 MPa (67.4 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, A or IH?

N is the default C30 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither A nor IH). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, C30-A or C30-IH?

C30-A. Its machinability rates good (58/100) against poor (20/100) for C30-IH; for welding the order is C30-A first (good, 68/100) then C30-IH (poor, 25/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in C30-A and C30-IH side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
