Steel C30-CD vs C30-IH

Steel · C30 temper comparison

C30-CD and C30-IH are two conditions of the same steel grade, C30: CD (cold drawn) versus IH (induction hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C30-CD is the stronger of the two: yield strength 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) against 360 MPa (52.2 ksi) for C30-IH, about 22% more. In exchange, C30-IH is the more ductile: elongation 22% versus 12% for C30-CD, and C30-IH is harder (520 HB vs 149 HB). C30-CD runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, C30-CD machines more easily (good vs poor) and C30-CD welds better (good vs poor).

C30-CD vs C30-IH — frequently asked

Is C30-CD stronger than C30-IH?

Yes. C30-CD has a typical yield strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) against 360 MPa (52.2 ksi) for C30-IH — about 22% more. Tensile strength is 525 MPa (76.1 ksi) vs 560 MPa (81.2 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CD or IH?

N is the default C30 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither CD nor IH). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, C30-CD or C30-IH?

C30-CD. Its machinability rates good (65/100) against poor (20/100) for C30-IH; for welding the order is C30-CD first (good, 65/100) then C30-IH (poor, 25/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in C30-CD and C30-IH side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
