Steel C22E +A vs C22E-CH

Steel · C22E temper comparison

C22E +A and C22E-CH are two conditions of the same steel grade, C22E: +A (annealed) versus CH (carburized and hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C22E-CH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 350 MPa (50.8 ksi) against 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) for C22E +A, about 40% more; tensile strength follows at 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) vs 430 MPa (62.4 ksi). In exchange, C22E +A is the more ductile: elongation 30% versus 14% for C22E-CH, and C22E-CH is harder (170 HB vs 120 HB). C22E +A runs hotter in service (400°C vs 180°C continuous). On the shop floor, C22E +A machines more easily (good vs poor) and C22E +A welds better (excellent vs poor).

C22E +A vs C22E-CH — frequently asked

Is C22E-CH stronger than C22E +A?

Yes. C22E-CH has a typical yield strength of 350 MPa (50.8 ksi) against 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) for C22E +A — about 40% more. Tensile strength is 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) vs 430 MPa (62.4 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, +A or CH?

+N is the default C22E condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither +A nor CH). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, C22E +A or C22E-CH?

C22E +A. Its machinability rates good (60/100) against poor (25/100) for C22E-CH; for welding the order is C22E +A first (excellent, 95/100) then C22E-CH (poor, 30/100).
