Steel A3 vs W5

Steel · grade comparison

Steel A3 and W5 are both steel grades. A3 is the stronger of the two: tensile strength 760 MPa (110 ksi) against 690 MPa (100 ksi) for W5, about 10% more. In exchange, W5 is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 20% for A3, and A3 is harder (217 HB vs 200 HB). W5 conducts heat better (48 W/m·K vs 24 W/m·K). On the shop floor, W5 machines more easily (good vs fair) and W5 sits in a lower cost tier (standard, $$) than A3 (premium, $$$).

A3Choose it when strength drives the design.

W5Choose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.

A3 vs W5 — frequently asked

Is A3 stronger than W5?

Yes. A3 has a typical tensile strength of 760 MPa (110 ksi) against 690 MPa (100 ksi) for W5 — about 10% more.

Which is cheaper, A3 or W5?

W5 is the lower-cost material: it sits in the standard tier ($$) while A3 is premium ($$$). Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.

Which is easier to machine, A3 or W5?

W5. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against fair (38/100) for A3.
