Steel A3 vs O6
Steel · grade comparison
Steel A3 and O6 are both steel grades. A3 is the stronger of the two: tensile strength 760 MPa (110 ksi) against 720 MPa (104 ksi) for O6, about 6% more. A3 is harder — 217 HB against 200 HB for O6 — which matters for wear surfaces and threads. O6 runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous) and O6 conducts heat better (32 W/m·K vs 24 W/m·K). On the shop floor, O6 machines more easily (good vs fair).
A3Choose it when strength drives the design, or when surface hardness matters.
O6Choose it when the part sees heat, or when the part is machined in volume.
A3 vs O6: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

A3 vs O6 — frequently asked
Is A3 stronger than O6?
Yes. A3 has a typical tensile strength of 760 MPa (110 ksi) against 720 MPa (104 ksi) for O6 — about 6% more.
Which is cheaper, A3 or O6?
Both sit in the same relative cost tier ($$$, premium); the part price will be decided by machining time, tolerance and quantity rather than by the material.
Which is easier to machine, A3 or O6?
O6. Its machinability rates good (62/100) against fair (38/100) for A3; for welding the order is O6 first (poor, 20/100) then A3 (poor, 15/100).
