Steel A3 vs L2

Steel · grade comparison

Steel A3 and L2 are both steel grades. L2 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 510 MPa (74 ksi) against 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) for A3, about 19% more. L2 is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 20% for A3, and A3 is harder (217 HB vs 183 HB). L2 runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous) and L2 conducts heat better (34 W/m·K vs 24 W/m·K). On the shop floor, L2 machines more easily (good vs fair), L2 welds better (25 vs 15 out of 100), and L2 sits in a lower cost tier (standard, $$) than A3 (premium, $$$).

L2Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded.

A3 vs L2 — frequently asked

Is L2 stronger than A3?

Yes. L2 has a typical yield strength of 510 MPa (74 ksi) against 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) for A3 — about 19% more. Tensile strength is 710 MPa (103 ksi) vs 760 MPa (110 ksi).

Which is cheaper, A3 or L2?

L2 is the lower-cost material: it sits in the standard tier ($$) while A3 is premium ($$$). Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.

Which is easier to machine, A3 or L2?

L2. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against fair (38/100) for A3; for welding the order is L2 first (poor, 25/100) then A3 (poor, 15/100).
