Steel 70-N vs 70-SR

Steel · 70 temper comparison

70-N and 70-SR are two conditions of the same steel grade, 70: N (normalized) versus SR (stress relieved). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. 70-SR is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,250 MPa (181 ksi) against 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) for 70-N, about 160% more; tensile strength follows at 1,350 MPa (196 ksi) vs 830 MPa (120 ksi). In exchange, 70-N is the more ductile: elongation 11% versus 3% for 70-SR, and 70-SR is harder (405 HB vs 245 HB). 70-N runs hotter in service (400°C vs 180°C continuous). On the shop floor, 70-N machines more easily (fair vs poor) and 70-N welds better (poor vs not recommended).

70-NChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

70-SRChoose it when strength drives the design.

70-N vs 70-SR — frequently asked

Is 70-SR stronger than 70-N?

Yes. 70-SR has a typical yield strength of 1,250 MPa (181 ksi) against 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) for 70-N — about 160% more. Tensile strength is 1,350 MPa (196 ksi) vs 830 MPa (120 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, N or SR?

QT45-50 is the default 70 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither N nor SR). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, 70-N or 70-SR?

70-N. Its machinability rates fair (40/100) against poor (22/100) for 70-SR; for welding the order is 70-N first (poor, 20/100) then 70-SR (not recommended, 8/100).

Ready to make it?

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in 70-N and 70-SR side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
