Magnesium Alloy AM100A-T4 vs AM100A-T7

Magnesium Alloy · AM100A temper comparison

AM100A-T4 and AM100A-T7 are two conditions of the same magnesium alloy grade, AM100A: T4 (solution heat treated and naturally aged) versus T7 (solution heat treated and overaged (stabilized)). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. AM100A-T7 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 110 MPa (16 ksi) against 83 MPa (12 ksi) for AM100A-T4, about 33% more. In exchange, AM100A-T4 is the more ductile: elongation 10% versus 4% for AM100A-T7, and AM100A-T7 is harder (63 HB vs 53 HB). AM100A-T7 runs hotter in service (150°C vs 110°C continuous).

AM100A-T4 vs AM100A-T7 — frequently asked

Is AM100A-T7 stronger than AM100A-T4?

Yes. AM100A-T7 has a typical yield strength of 110 MPa (16 ksi) against 83 MPa (12 ksi) for AM100A-T4 — about 33% more. Tensile strength is 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) vs 275 MPa (39.9 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, T4 or T7?

T6 is the default AM100A condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither T4 nor T7). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

When should I choose AM100A-T4 over AM100A-T7?

Pick AM100A-T4 when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded. Pick AM100A-T7 when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
