Aluminum CP-Al-H18 vs CP-Al-H22

Aluminum · CP-Al temper comparison

CP-Al-H18 and CP-Al-H22 are two conditions of the same aluminum grade, CP-Al: H18 (strain hardened, full hard) versus H22 (strain hardened and partially annealed, quarter hard). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. CP-Al-H18 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 135 MPa (19.6 ksi) against 70 MPa (10.2 ksi) for CP-Al-H22, about 93% more; tensile strength follows at 150 MPa (21.8 ksi) vs 95 MPa (13.8 ksi). In exchange, CP-Al-H22 is the more ductile: elongation 14% versus 4% for CP-Al-H18, and CP-Al-H18 is harder (38 HB vs 25 HB). CP-Al-H22 runs hotter in service (150°C vs 120°C continuous).

CP-Al-H18 vs CP-Al-H22 — frequently asked

Is CP-Al-H18 stronger than CP-Al-H22?

Yes. CP-Al-H18 has a typical yield strength of 135 MPa (19.6 ksi) against 70 MPa (10.2 ksi) for CP-Al-H22 — about 93% more. Tensile strength is 150 MPa (21.8 ksi) vs 95 MPa (13.8 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, H18 or H22?

AB is the default CP-Al condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither H18 nor H22). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, CP-Al-H18 or CP-Al-H22?

CP-Al-H18. Its machinability rates fair (40/100) against poor (33/100) for CP-Al-H22; for welding the order is CP-Al-H22 first (excellent, 92/100) then CP-Al-H18 (excellent, 85/100).
