Aluminum AC8C-T6 vs AC8C-T7

Aluminum · AC8C temper comparison

AC8C-T6 and AC8C-T7 are two conditions of the same aluminum grade, AC8C: T6 (solution heat treated and artificially aged) versus T7 (solution heat treated and overaged (stabilized)). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. AC8C-T6 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) against 200 MPa (29 ksi) for AC8C-T7, about 25% more; tensile strength follows at 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) vs 235 MPa (34.1 ksi). In exchange, AC8C-T7 is the more ductile: elongation 1.3% versus 0.8% for AC8C-T6, and AC8C-T6 is harder (110 HB vs 100 HB). AC8C-T7 runs hotter in service (250°C vs 200°C continuous) and AC8C-T7 conducts heat better (130 W/m·K vs 110 W/m·K).

AC8C-T6 vs AC8C-T7 — frequently asked

Is AC8C-T6 stronger than AC8C-T7?

Yes. AC8C-T6 has a typical yield strength of 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) against 200 MPa (29 ksi) for AC8C-T7 — about 25% more. Tensile strength is 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) vs 235 MPa (34.1 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, T6 or T7?

T6 is the default AC8C condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

When should I choose AC8C-T6 over AC8C-T7?

Pick AC8C-T6 when strength drives the design. Pick AC8C-T7 when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.
