Aluminum AC2A-T5 vs AC2A-T7

Aluminum · AC2A temper comparison

AC2A-T5 and AC2A-T7 are two conditions of the same aluminum grade, AC2A: T5 (cooled from hot working and artificially aged) versus T7 (solution heat treated and overaged (stabilized)). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. AC2A-T5 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) against 150 MPa (21.8 ksi) for AC2A-T7, about 20% more. In exchange, AC2A-T7 is the more ductile: elongation 2.5% versus 1.5% for AC2A-T5, and AC2A-T5 is harder (80 HB vs 75 HB). AC2A-T7 runs hotter in service (200°C vs 175°C continuous).

AC2A-T5 vs AC2A-T7 — frequently asked

Is AC2A-T5 stronger than AC2A-T7?

Yes. AC2A-T5 has a typical yield strength of 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) against 150 MPa (21.8 ksi) for AC2A-T7 — about 20% more. Tensile strength is 205 MPa (29.7 ksi) vs 215 MPa (31.2 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, T5 or T7?

T6 is the default AC2A condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither T5 nor T7). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

When should I choose AC2A-T5 over AC2A-T7?

Pick AC2A-T5 when strength drives the design. Pick AC2A-T7 when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.
