Aluminum AC2A-T5 vs AC2A-T6

Aluminum · AC2A temper comparison

AC2A-T5 and AC2A-T6 are two conditions of the same aluminum grade, AC2A: T5 (cooled from hot working and artificially aged) versus T6 (solution heat treated and artificially aged). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. AC2A-T5 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) against 170 MPa (24.7 ksi) for AC2A-T6, about 6% more. In exchange, AC2A-T6 is the more ductile: elongation 2% versus 1.5% for AC2A-T5, and AC2A-T6 is harder (85 HB vs 80 HB).

AC2A-T5 vs AC2A-T6 — frequently asked

Is AC2A-T5 stronger than AC2A-T6?

Yes. AC2A-T5 has a typical yield strength of 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) against 170 MPa (24.7 ksi) for AC2A-T6 — about 6% more. Tensile strength is 205 MPa (29.7 ksi) vs 250 MPa (36.3 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, T5 or T6?

T6 is the default AC2A condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

When should I choose AC2A-T5 over AC2A-T6?

Pick AC2A-T5 when strength drives the design. Pick AC2A-T6 when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded.
