Tinted Clear Coating
Colouring & dyeing · Spray applied
Tinted clear coating is a transparent or translucent colored topcoat that modifies hue while preserving some view of the substrate.

What is Tinted coat?
It is used for prototypes, lenses, light pipes, and decorative depth effects where opaque paint is unsuitable.
How it works
Transparent dye or finely dispersed pigment is incorporated in a clear resin and sprayed in controlled passes. Color density increases with film thickness and coat count, making gun overlap and part geometry visible if application is uneven. The substrate must already be smooth because the coating transmits its texture and defects. Cure follows the chosen acrylic, polyurethane, lacquer, or other clear binder, and compatibility must be verified on the actual printed polymer.
Why specify it
- Adds transparent color without fully hiding the substrate
- Supports candy-color and depth effects
- Can combine color with a protective clear binder
- Useful for appearance prototypes and light-transmitting parts
Where it falls short
- Color shifts with film thickness and spray overlap
- Deep recesses can appear darker from accumulated film
- Ultraviolet fade depends on dye and binder
- Cannot make a rough or cloudy print optically clear
Tinted coat at a glance
Tinted coat is strongest on cosmetic quality (92 of 100), at a standard cost. Surface hardness is not rated: the finish leaves the part's own surface.
Each score is 0–100 against every finish in this catalog. Corrosion comes from salt-spray life (ASTM B117, log scale) and hardness from the finish layer's Vickers or pencil hardness; cosmetic, lubricity and cost are FabDigit's engineering assessment. Economy on the radar is the inverse of cost.

How Tinted coat is applied, and what it does to the part
- 1Prepare and seal substrate
- 2Approve color master
- 3Mask
- 4Mix tint consistently
- 5Spray controlled passes
- 6Flash
- 7Cure
- 8Measure color and transmission on approved geometry
| Dimensions | Allow 15–50 µm per face and define optical zones separately from ordinary cosmetic surfaces. |
|---|---|
| Build-up per side | 15–50 µm — Transparent color film adds its cured thickness. |
| Masking | Usually needed. Mask functional optics, threads, fits, adhesive areas, and surfaces requiring a different optical density. |
| Electrical | Insulating |
| Appearance | Transparent to translucent colored gloss or satin; depth varies with substrate and film thickness. |
| Added lead time | 4–8 working days on top of the bare part |
Design rules for Tinted coat
What to decide on the drawing before the part goes to the finisher.
- Approve color on production-representative geometry.Overlaps and recesses change optical density.
- Specify illuminant and observer for color measurement.Transparent colors are highly substrate- and lighting-dependent.
- Control total dry-film thickness tightly.Color density changes with every added micrometer.
- Do not use coating to correct cloudy print material.Tint cannot restore bulk optical clarity.
Tinted coat versus the alternatives

The radar overlays Tinted coat with Clear Coating, its most common alternative — chosen when protection is needed without color shift. Scores in the table are 0–100 across every finish in the catalog.
Cost, lead time and compliance
Relative cost
Tinted Clear Coating is a standard-cost finish ($$): cheaper than about 60 % of the finishes FabDigit quotes.
Finishing is priced per part with a lot minimum, from FabDigit's own China-side rates. The exact figure appears on the instant quote once the part is uploaded.

Tinted coat — frequently asked
what is tinted clear coat
It is a transparent or translucent resin film carrying dye or fine pigment. It changes hue while allowing the prepared substrate to remain visible.
how thick is tinted coating
A broad liquid range is 15–50 µm. Because color density changes with thickness, the production range often needs to be tighter than an ordinary clearcoat.
can tinted coating make a 3D print transparent
No. It can add color and surface gloss, but internal scattering, layer interfaces, and cloudy resin remain. Optical clarity requires suitable material and finishing before tinting.
why is tinted clear coat uneven
Spray overlap, runs, corners, and deep pockets accumulate different thickness. Since optical density tracks film thickness, those variations appear as bands or dark regions.
does tinted coating fade in sunlight
It can. Dye, pigment, binder, and ultraviolet stabilizers determine fade, so outdoor parts need product-specific weathering validation.
