STEP to STL converter
Open the model, choose units and mesh quality, then download a binary STL.
How it works
Open
Drop a STEP or STP file.
Check
Inspect the model and confirm its size.
Download
Choose units and mesh quality, then download.
What you can do
Units
Export in millimetres or inches.
Mesh quality
Choose coarse, standard or fine.
Measure
Measure faces, edges, holes, angles and overall size.
Parts list
Hide or isolate bodies in a multi-body model.
Share link
Share a 30-day browser link. No account required.
Manufacturing price
Get an instant estimate or send the part for engineering review.
STEP or STL?
STEP stores exact CAD surfaces. STL approximates those surfaces with triangles for 3D-printing software.
Keep the STEP as your master file. Export a new STL when you need one.
What carries over
| From the STEP file | In the STL |
|---|---|
| Shape | Yes, as triangles |
| Size and position | Yes |
| Multiple bodies | Yes, merged into one STL |
| CAD features | No |
| Colours, part names, materials | No |
| Units | Recorded in the header; STL has no unit field |
Supported formats
Every tool accepts the same file types.
| Format | Extensions | Opens as |

| IGES | .iges, .igs | 3D solid or surface: view, measure and export |
| STL | .stl | 3D mesh: view and measure |
| OBJ | .obj | 3D mesh: view, measure and export |

FAQ
Is my file uploaded to FabDigit?
Yes. We upload it over an encrypted connection to open and price it. Only FabDigit and people with your share link can access it.
Can I get a price?
Yes. We price eligible parts instantly. Other parts go to an engineer for review. You can change the material, finish and quantity before ordering.
What units is the STL in?
Millimetres by default. Choose inches if needed. STL has no standard unit field, so confirm the import units in your software.
How fine is the mesh?
Standard suits most parts. Coarse makes a smaller file. Fine gives smoother curves.
Does an assembly convert?
Yes. All visible bodies are merged into one STL.
Can it open SOLIDWORKS, Inventor and CATIA files?
Yes. We convert supported part files to STEP, usually in under a minute. Without an account, you can convert 5 native files per day. Sign in for more.
Can I share the model?
Yes. Copy a private link that works for 30 days. No account or software is required.
Is it free?
Yes. No account or installation is required.
