What is Dental Gold Type II?

Dental Gold Type II is a medium-hardness high-gold casting alloy to ADA Specification No. 5, Type II, positioned between the soft Type I and the hard Type III. At 200 MPa yield strength, 380 MPa tensile strength, 32% elongation and a 95 GPa elastic modulus it carries moderate-stress inlays and onlays while still allowing margins to be burnished, and it is used as-cast, soft or hard. Oral corrosion resistance is close to inert, so no plating or passivation is needed, but the alloy is soft and gummy to machine and costly against base-metal alternatives. Type III is the choice for crowns and bridges. Dental Gold Type II has a density of 15.6 g/cm³ (0.564 lb/in³), heavier than 79% of precious metal grades. It melts at 910°C (1,670 °F). Dental Gold Type II has a yield strength of 200 MPa (29 ksi) and a tensile strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) — stronger than 51% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 32% and the elastic modulus is 95 GPa (13.8 Msi).
