Steel T8A-A vs T8A-N
Steel · T8A temper comparison
T8A-A and T8A-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, T8A: A (solution annealed) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. T8A-N is the stronger of the two: yield strength 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) against 375 MPa (54.4 ksi) for T8A-A, about 39% more; tensile strength follows at 950 MPa (138 ksi) vs 620 MPa (89.9 ksi). In exchange, T8A-A is the more ductile: elongation 24% versus 11% for T8A-N, and T8A-N is harder (285 HB vs 179 HB). On the shop floor, T8A-A machines more easily (good vs fair).
T8A-AChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.

T8A-A vs T8A-N: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

T8A-A vs T8A-N — frequently asked
Is T8A-N stronger than T8A-A?
Yes. T8A-N has a typical yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) against 375 MPa (54.4 ksi) for T8A-A — about 39% more. Tensile strength is 950 MPa (138 ksi) vs 620 MPa (89.9 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, A or N?
A is the default T8A condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, T8A-A or T8A-N?
T8A-A. Its machinability rates good (58/100) against fair (38/100) for T8A-N; for welding the order is T8A-A first (poor, 18/100) then T8A-N (not recommended, 12/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in T8A-A and T8A-N side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.
Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
