Steel T5-ANN vs T5 HT-65

Steel · T5 temper comparison

T5-ANN and T5 HT-65 are two conditions of the same steel grade, T5: ANN (annealed) versus HT-65 (hardened & tempered 65–66 HRC). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. T5 HT-65 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,950 MPa (283 ksi) against 590 MPa (85.6 ksi) for T5-ANN, about 3.3 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,050 MPa (297 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi). In exchange, T5-ANN is the more ductile: elongation 12% versus 0.3% for T5 HT-65, and T5 HT-65 is harder (865 HV vs 268 HV). T5 HT-65 runs hotter in service (600°C vs 400°C continuous) and T5-ANN conducts heat better (22 W/m·K vs 19 W/m·K). On the shop floor, T5-ANN machines more easily (poor vs not recommended) and T5-ANN welds better (poor vs not recommended).

T5-ANN vs T5 HT-65 — frequently asked

Is T5 HT-65 stronger than T5-ANN?

Yes. T5 HT-65 has a typical yield strength of 1,950 MPa (283 ksi) against 590 MPa (85.6 ksi) for T5-ANN — about 3.3 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,050 MPa (297 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, ANN or HT-65?

ANN is the default T5 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, T5-ANN or T5 HT-65?

T5-ANN. Its machinability rates poor (32/100) against not recommended (5/100) for T5 HT-65; for welding the order is T5-ANN first (poor, 15/100) then T5 HT-65 (not recommended, 5/100).
