Steel SUJ2 Annealed vs SUJ2 Q&T
Steel · SUJ2 temper comparison
SUJ2 Annealed and SUJ2 Q&T are two conditions of the same steel grade, SUJ2: Annealed versus Q&T (quenched and tempered). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. SUJ2 Q&T is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,900 MPa (276 ksi) against 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) for SUJ2 Annealed, about 4.5 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,280 MPa (331 ksi) vs 660 MPa (95.7 ksi). In exchange, SUJ2 Annealed is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 1.5% for SUJ2 Q&T, and SUJ2 Q&T is harder (760 HV vs 200 HV). SUJ2 Annealed runs hotter in service (200°C vs 120°C continuous) and SUJ2 Annealed conducts heat better (46 W/m·K vs 36 W/m·K). On the shop floor, SUJ2 Annealed machines more easily (fair vs not recommended).
SUJ2 AnnealedChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.
SUJ2 Q&TChoose it when strength drives the design.
SUJ2 Annealed vs SUJ2 Q&T: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

SUJ2 Annealed vs SUJ2 Q&T — frequently asked
Is SUJ2 Q&T stronger than SUJ2 Annealed?
Yes. SUJ2 Q&T has a typical yield strength of 1,900 MPa (276 ksi) against 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) for SUJ2 Annealed — about 4.5 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,280 MPa (331 ksi) vs 660 MPa (95.7 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Annealed or Q&T?
Annealed is the default SUJ2 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, SUJ2 Annealed or SUJ2 Q&T?
SUJ2 Annealed. Its machinability rates fair (45/100) against not recommended (8/100) for SUJ2 Q&T; for welding the order is SUJ2 Annealed first (not recommended, 12/100) then SUJ2 Q&T (not recommended, 5/100).
