Steel S30C-IH vs S30C-N
Steel · S30C temper comparison
S30C-IH and S30C-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, S30C: IH (induction hardened) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. Both yield at about 330 MPa — the mechanical properties are the same, and the difference is in how the stock is processed and what it is certified to (induction hardened versus normalized). S30C-N is the more ductile: elongation 26% versus 20% for S30C-IH, and S30C-IH is harder (480 HB vs 156 HB). S30C-N runs hotter in service (400°C vs 180°C continuous). On the shop floor, S30C-N machines more easily (good vs poor) and S30C-N welds better (good vs poor).
S30C-NChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.
S30C-IH vs S30C-N: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

S30C-IH vs S30C-N — frequently asked
What is the difference between S30C-IH and S30C-N?

Both yield at about 330 MPa — the mechanical properties are the same, and the difference is in how the stock is processed and what it is certified to (induction hardened versus normalized).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, IH or N?
N is the default S30C condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, S30C-IH or S30C-N?
S30C-N. Its machinability rates good (62/100) against poor (20/100) for S30C-IH; for welding the order is S30C-N first (good, 65/100) then S30C-IH (poor, 20/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in S30C-IH and S30C-N side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.
Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
