Steel S2 Annealed vs S2 Q&T
Steel · S2 temper comparison
S2 Annealed and S2 Q&T are two conditions of the same steel grade, S2: Annealed versus Q&T (quenched and tempered). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. S2 Q&T is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,700 MPa (247 ksi) against 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) for S2 Annealed, about 3.7 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,000 MPa (290 ksi) vs 760 MPa (110 ksi). In exchange, S2 Annealed is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 6% for S2 Q&T, and S2 Q&T is harder (640 HV vs 210 HV). S2 Annealed runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, S2 Annealed machines more easily (fair vs not recommended).
S2 AnnealedChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.
S2 Q&TChoose it when strength drives the design.
S2 Annealed vs S2 Q&T: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

S2 Annealed vs S2 Q&T — frequently asked
Is S2 Q&T stronger than S2 Annealed?
Yes. S2 Q&T has a typical yield strength of 1,700 MPa (247 ksi) against 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) for S2 Annealed — about 3.7 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,000 MPa (290 ksi) vs 760 MPa (110 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Annealed or Q&T?
Annealed is the default S2 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, S2 Annealed or S2 Q&T?
S2 Annealed. Its machinability rates fair (45/100) against not recommended (12/100) for S2 Q&T.
