Steel S1 Annealed vs S1 Q&T
Steel · S1 temper comparison
S1 Annealed and S1 Q&T are two conditions of the same steel grade, S1: Annealed versus Q&T (quenched and tempered). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. S1 Q&T is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,550 MPa (225 ksi) against 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) for S1 Annealed, about 3.7 times as much; tensile strength follows at 1,900 MPa (276 ksi) vs 690 MPa (100 ksi). In exchange, S1 Annealed is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 6% for S1 Q&T, and S1 Q&T is harder (600 HV vs 210 HV). S1 Q&T runs hotter in service (250°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, S1 Annealed machines more easily (fair vs not recommended) and S1 Annealed welds better (poor vs not recommended).
S1 AnnealedChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.
S1 Q&TChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
S1 Annealed vs S1 Q&T: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

S1 Annealed vs S1 Q&T — frequently asked
Is S1 Q&T stronger than S1 Annealed?
Yes. S1 Q&T has a typical yield strength of 1,550 MPa (225 ksi) against 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) for S1 Annealed — about 3.7 times as much. Tensile strength is 1,900 MPa (276 ksi) vs 690 MPa (100 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Annealed or Q&T?
Annealed is the default S1 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, S1 Annealed or S1 Q&T?
S1 Annealed. Its machinability rates fair (45/100) against not recommended (12/100) for S1 Q&T; for welding the order is S1 Annealed first (poor, 20/100) then S1 Q&T (not recommended, 10/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in S1 Annealed and S1 Q&T side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.
