Steel P20+Ni Nitrided vs P20+Ni Prehard
Steel · P20+Ni temper comparison
P20+Ni Nitrided and P20+Ni Prehard are two conditions of the same steel grade, P20+Ni: Nitrided versus Prehard (pre-hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. Both yield at about 860 MPa — the mechanical properties are the same, and the difference is in how the stock is processed and what it is certified to (Nitrided versus pre-hardened). P20+Ni Prehard is the more ductile: elongation 14% versus 10% for P20+Ni Nitrided, and P20+Ni Nitrided is harder (650 HV vs 315 HV). P20+Ni Nitrided runs hotter in service (480°C vs 400°C continuous). On the shop floor, P20+Ni Prehard machines more easily (fair vs not recommended) and P20+Ni Prehard welds better (fair vs not recommended).

P20+Ni Nitrided vs P20+Ni Prehard: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

P20+Ni Nitrided vs P20+Ni Prehard — frequently asked
What is the difference between P20+Ni Nitrided and P20+Ni Prehard?
P20+Ni Nitrided and P20+Ni Prehard are two conditions of the same steel grade, P20+Ni: Nitrided versus Prehard (pre-hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. Both yield at about 860 MPa — the mechanical properties are the same, and the difference is in how the stock is processed and what it is certified to (Nitrided versus pre-hardened).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Nitrided or Prehard?
Annealed is the default P20+Ni condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither Nitrided nor Prehard). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, P20+Ni Nitrided or P20+Ni Prehard?
P20+Ni Prehard. Its machinability rates fair (50/100) against not recommended (10/100) for P20+Ni Nitrided; for welding the order is P20+Ni Prehard first (fair, 50/100) then P20+Ni Nitrided (not recommended, 10/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in P20+Ni Nitrided and P20+Ni Prehard side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.
Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
