Steel M7-ANN vs M7 HT-N

Steel · M7 temper comparison

M7-ANN and M7 HT-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, M7: ANN (annealed) versus HT-N (hardened + steam/nitride/PVD surface treated). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. M7 HT-N is the stronger of the two: yield strength 2,100 MPa (305 ksi) against 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) for M7-ANN, about 4.0 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,400 MPa (348 ksi) vs 830 MPa (120 ksi). In exchange, M7-ANN is the more ductile: elongation 18% versus 1% for M7 HT-N, and M7 HT-N is harder (1,200 HV vs 248 HV). M7 HT-N runs hotter in service (560°C vs 500°C continuous) and M7-ANN conducts heat better (24 W/m·K vs 21 W/m·K). On the shop floor, M7-ANN machines more easily (poor vs not recommended).

M7-ANNChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.

M7 HT-NChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.

M7-ANN vs M7 HT-N — frequently asked

Is M7 HT-N stronger than M7-ANN?

Yes. M7 HT-N has a typical yield strength of 2,100 MPa (305 ksi) against 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) for M7-ANN — about 4.0 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,400 MPa (348 ksi) vs 830 MPa (120 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, ANN or HT-N?

ANN is the default M7 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, M7-ANN or M7 HT-N?

M7-ANN. Its machinability rates poor (32/100) against not recommended (4/100) for M7 HT-N; for welding the order is M7-ANN first (not recommended, 12/100) then M7 HT-N (not recommended, 5/100).
