Steel L2-ANN vs L2-HR

Steel · L2 temper comparison

L2-ANN and L2-HR are two conditions of the same steel grade, L2: ANN (annealed) versus HR (hot rolled). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. L2-HR is the stronger of the two: yield strength 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) against 510 MPa (74 ksi) for L2-ANN, about 10% more; tensile strength follows at 850 MPa (123 ksi) vs 710 MPa (103 ksi). In exchange, L2-ANN is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 18% for L2-HR, and L2-HR is harder (240 HB vs 183 HB). On the shop floor, L2-ANN machines more easily (good vs fair).

L2-ANN vs L2-HR — frequently asked

Is L2-HR stronger than L2-ANN?

Yes. L2-HR has a typical yield strength of 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) against 510 MPa (74 ksi) for L2-ANN — about 10% more. Tensile strength is 850 MPa (123 ksi) vs 710 MPa (103 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, ANN or HR?

ANN is the default L2 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, L2-ANN or L2-HR?

L2-ANN. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against fair (45/100) for L2-HR; for welding the order is L2-ANN first (poor, 25/100) then L2-HR (poor, 20/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in L2-ANN and L2-HR side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
