Steel L1-HR vs L1-SR
Steel · L1 temper comparison
L1-HR and L1-SR are two conditions of the same steel grade, L1: HR (hot rolled) versus SR (stress relieved). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. L1-HR is the stronger of the two: yield strength 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) against 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) for L1-SR, about 14% more; tensile strength follows at 850 MPa (123 ksi) vs 740 MPa (107 ksi). In exchange, L1-SR is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 14% for L1-HR, and L1-HR is harder (240 HB vs 200 HB). On the shop floor, L1-SR machines more easily (good vs fair).
L1-HRChoose it when strength drives the design.
L1-SRChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.
L1-HR vs L1-SR: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

L1-HR vs L1-SR — frequently asked
Is L1-HR stronger than L1-SR?
Yes. L1-HR has a typical yield strength of 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) against 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) for L1-SR — about 14% more. Tensile strength is 850 MPa (123 ksi) vs 740 MPa (107 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or SR?
ANN is the default L1 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither HR nor SR). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, L1-HR or L1-SR?
L1-SR. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against fair (42/100) for L1-HR.

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in L1-HR and L1-SR side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.
