Steel L1-HR vs L1 QT-62

Steel · L1 temper comparison

L1-HR and L1 QT-62 are two conditions of the same steel grade, L1: HR (hot rolled) versus QT-62 (oil hardened + tempered 150–175 °C). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. L1 QT-62 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,950 MPa (283 ksi) against 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) for L1-HR, about 4.0 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,300 MPa (334 ksi) vs 850 MPa (123 ksi). In exchange, L1-HR is the more ductile: elongation 14% versus 1% for L1 QT-62, and L1-HR is harder (240 HB vs 195 HB). L1-HR runs hotter in service (200°C vs 140°C continuous) and L1-HR conducts heat better (41 W/m·K vs 34 W/m·K). On the shop floor, L1-HR machines more easily (fair vs not recommended).

L1-HR vs L1 QT-62 — frequently asked

Is L1 QT-62 stronger than L1-HR?

Yes. L1 QT-62 has a typical yield strength of 1,950 MPa (283 ksi) against 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) for L1-HR — about 4.0 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,300 MPa (334 ksi) vs 850 MPa (123 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or QT-62?

ANN is the default L1 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither HR nor QT-62). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, L1-HR or L1 QT-62?

L1-HR. Its machinability rates fair (42/100) against not recommended (5/100) for L1 QT-62.

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in L1-HR and L1 QT-62 side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
