Steel H41-ANN vs H41-AQ

Steel · H41 temper comparison

H41-ANN and H41-AQ are two conditions of the same steel grade, H41: ANN (annealed) versus AQ (as-quenched). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. H41-AQ is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,650 MPa (239 ksi) against 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) for H41-ANN, about 3.1 times as much; tensile strength follows at 1,900 MPa (276 ksi) vs 800 MPa (116 ksi). In exchange, H41-ANN is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 1% for H41-AQ, and H41-AQ is harder (690 HB vs 217 HB). H41-ANN runs hotter in service (450°C vs 200°C continuous) and H41-ANN conducts heat better (26 W/m·K vs 22 W/m·K). On the shop floor, H41-ANN machines more easily (fair vs not recommended) and H41-ANN welds better (poor vs not recommended).

H41-ANN vs H41-AQ — frequently asked

Is H41-AQ stronger than H41-ANN?

Yes. H41-AQ has a typical yield strength of 1,650 MPa (239 ksi) against 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) for H41-ANN — about 3.1 times as much. Tensile strength is 1,900 MPa (276 ksi) vs 800 MPa (116 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, ANN or AQ?

ANN is the default H41 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, H41-ANN or H41-AQ?

H41-ANN. Its machinability rates fair (40/100) against not recommended (5/100) for H41-AQ; for welding the order is H41-ANN first (poor, 25/100) then H41-AQ (not recommended, 5/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in H41-ANN and H41-AQ side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
