Steel H11-HIP vs H11 Q&T

Steel · H11 temper comparison

H11-HIP and H11 Q&T are two conditions of the same steel grade, H11: HIP (hot isostatic pressed) versus Q&T (quenched and tempered). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. H11-HIP is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,400 MPa (203 ksi) against 1,300 MPa (189 ksi) for H11 Q&T, about 8% more; tensile strength follows at 1,650 MPa (239 ksi) vs 1,550 MPa (225 ksi). In exchange, H11 Q&T is the more ductile: elongation 12% versus 9% for H11-HIP, and H11-HIP is harder (490 HV vs 460 HV).

H11-HIP vs H11 Q&T — frequently asked

Is H11-HIP stronger than H11 Q&T?

Yes. H11-HIP has a typical yield strength of 1,400 MPa (203 ksi) against 1,300 MPa (189 ksi) for H11 Q&T — about 8% more. Tensile strength is 1,650 MPa (239 ksi) vs 1,550 MPa (225 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HIP or Q&T?

Annealed is the default H11 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither HIP nor Q&T). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, H11-HIP or H11 Q&T?

H11 Q&T, by a small margin. Both rate poor for machinability — 30/100 against 25/100 for H11-HIP; for welding the order is H11-HIP first (fair, 35/100) then H11 Q&T (poor, 30/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in H11-HIP and H11 Q&T side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
