Steel GCr4-CD vs GCr4-N

Steel · GCr4 temper comparison

GCr4-CD and GCr4-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, GCr4: CD (cold drawn) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. GCr4-CD is the stronger of the two: yield strength 600 MPa (87 ksi) against 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) for GCr4-N, about 15% more. GCr4-N is harder — 290 HB against 225 HB for GCr4-CD — which matters for wear surfaces and threads. GCr4-N runs hotter in service (250°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, GCr4-CD machines more easily (fair vs poor) and GCr4-CD forms better (25 vs 15 out of 100).

GCr4-CDChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part is machined in volume.

GCr4-NChoose it when surface hardness matters, or when the part sees heat.

GCr4-CD vs GCr4-N — frequently asked

Is GCr4-CD stronger than GCr4-N?

Yes. GCr4-CD has a typical yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) against 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) for GCr4-N — about 15% more. Tensile strength is 780 MPa (113 ksi) vs 950 MPa (138 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CD or N?

A is the default GCr4 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither CD nor N). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, GCr4-CD or GCr4-N?

GCr4-CD. Its machinability rates fair (48/100) against poor (25/100) for GCr4-N.
