Steel En47-CD vs En47-HR

Steel · En47 temper comparison

En47-CD and En47-HR are two conditions of the same steel grade, En47: CD (cold drawn) versus HR (hot rolled). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. En47-CD is the stronger of the two: yield strength 700 MPa (102 ksi) against 600 MPa (87 ksi) for En47-HR, about 17% more. In exchange, En47-HR is the more ductile: elongation 14% versus 10% for En47-CD, and En47-HR is harder (280 HB vs 250 HB). En47-HR runs hotter in service (400°C vs 250°C continuous). On the shop floor, En47-CD machines more easily (good vs fair).

En47-CD vs En47-HR — frequently asked

Is En47-CD stronger than En47-HR?

Yes. En47-CD has a typical yield strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) against 600 MPa (87 ksi) for En47-HR — about 17% more. Tensile strength is 860 MPa (125 ksi) vs 950 MPa (138 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CD or HR?

QT44-48 is the default En47 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither CD nor HR). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, En47-CD or En47-HR?

En47-CD. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against fair (45/100) for En47-HR; for welding the order is En47-CD first (poor, 25/100) then En47-HR (poor, 20/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in En47-CD and En47-HR side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
