Steel En39-A vs En39-HR

Steel · En39 temper comparison

En39-A and En39-HR are two conditions of the same steel grade, En39: A (solution annealed) versus HR (hot rolled). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. En39-HR is the stronger of the two: yield strength 800 MPa (116 ksi) against 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) for En39-A, about 45% more; tensile strength follows at 1,100 MPa (160 ksi) vs 800 MPa (116 ksi). In exchange, En39-A is the more ductile: elongation 18% versus 12% for En39-HR, and En39-HR is harder (340 HB vs 240 HB). On the shop floor, En39-A machines more easily (fair vs poor) and En39-A welds better (poor vs not recommended).

En39-AChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.

En39-A vs En39-HR — frequently asked

Is En39-HR stronger than En39-A?

Yes. En39-HR has a typical yield strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) against 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) for En39-A — about 45% more. Tensile strength is 1,100 MPa (160 ksi) vs 800 MPa (116 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, A or HR?

A is the default En39 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, En39-A or En39-HR?

En39-A. Its machinability rates fair (40/100) against poor (22/100) for En39-HR; for welding the order is En39-A first (poor, 20/100) then En39-HR (not recommended, 10/100).
