Steel EN19-HR vs EN19 Q&T

Steel · EN19 temper comparison

EN19-HR and EN19 Q&T are two conditions of the same steel grade, EN19: HR (hot rolled) versus Q&T (quenched and tempered). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. EN19 Q&T is the stronger of the two: yield strength 830 MPa (120 ksi) against 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) for EN19-HR, about 60% more; tensile strength follows at 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) vs 800 MPa (116 ksi). In exchange, EN19-HR is the more ductile: elongation 18% versus 14% for EN19 Q&T, and EN19 Q&T is harder (293 HB vs 235 HB). On the shop floor, EN19-HR welds better (fair vs poor).

EN19-HR vs EN19 Q&T — frequently asked

Is EN19 Q&T stronger than EN19-HR?

Yes. EN19 Q&T has a typical yield strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) against 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) for EN19-HR — about 60% more. Tensile strength is 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) vs 800 MPa (116 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or Q&T?

HR is the default EN19 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which welds better, EN19-HR or EN19 Q&T?

EN19-HR. Its weldability rates fair (40/100) against poor (30/100) for EN19 Q&T.
