Steel D4-ANN vs D4-HT64

Steel · D4 temper comparison

D4-ANN and D4-HT64 are two conditions of the same steel grade, D4: ANN (annealed) versus HT64 (hardened, as-quenched / 150 °C temper, 62–64 HRC). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. D4-HT64 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,950 MPa (283 ksi) against 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) for D4-ANN, about 4.3 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,100 MPa (305 ksi) vs 780 MPa (113 ksi). In exchange, D4-ANN is the more ductile: elongation 12% versus 0.5% for D4-HT64, and D4-HT64 is harder (800 HV vs 247 HV). D4-ANN runs hotter in service (250°C vs 150°C continuous). On the shop floor, D4-ANN machines more easily (poor vs not recommended).

D4-ANN vs D4-HT64 — frequently asked

Is D4-HT64 stronger than D4-ANN?

Yes. D4-HT64 has a typical yield strength of 1,950 MPa (283 ksi) against 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) for D4-ANN — about 4.3 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,100 MPa (305 ksi) vs 780 MPa (113 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, ANN or HT64?

ANN is the default D4 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, D4-ANN or D4-HT64?

D4-ANN. Its machinability rates poor (28/100) against not recommended (3/100) for D4-HT64; for welding the order is D4-ANN first (not recommended, 12/100) then D4-HT64 (not recommended, 4/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in D4-ANN and D4-HT64 side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
