Steel A2 vs O7

Steel · grade comparison

Steel A2 and O7 are both steel grades. A2 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) against 400 MPa (58 ksi) for O7, about 18% more; tensile strength follows at 740 MPa (107 ksi) vs 690 MPa (100 ksi). A2 is harder — 217 HB against 202 HB for O7 — which matters for wear surfaces and threads. A2 runs hotter in service (425°C vs 200°C continuous) and O7 conducts heat better (33 W/m·K vs 26 W/m·K). On the shop floor, O7 machines more easily (good vs fair) and A2 forms better (fair vs poor).

A2Choose it when strength drives the design, or when surface hardness matters.

O7Choose it when the part is machined in volume.

A2 vs O7 — frequently asked

Is A2 stronger than O7?

Yes. A2 has a typical yield strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) against 400 MPa (58 ksi) for O7 — about 18% more. Tensile strength is 740 MPa (107 ksi) vs 690 MPa (100 ksi).

Which is cheaper, A2 or O7?

Both sit in the same relative cost tier ($$$, premium); the part price will be decided by machining time, tolerance and quantity rather than by the material.

Which is easier to machine, A2 or O7?

O7. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against fair (45/100) for A2; for welding the order is A2 first (poor, 20/100) then O7 (poor, 15/100).
