Steel A2 vs L7
Steel · grade comparison
Steel A2 and L7 are both steel grades. A2 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) against 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) for L7, about 13% more. In exchange, L7 is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 22% for A2, and A2 is harder (217 HB vs 195 HB). A2 runs hotter in service (425°C vs 250°C continuous) and L7 conducts heat better (35 W/m·K vs 26 W/m·K). On the shop floor, L7 sits in a lower cost tier (standard, $$) than A2 (premium, $$$).
A2Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
L7Choose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when cost is the deciding factor.
A2 vs L7: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

A2 vs L7 — frequently asked
Is A2 stronger than L7?
Yes. A2 has a typical yield strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) against 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) for L7 — about 13% more. Tensile strength is 740 MPa (107 ksi) vs 750 MPa (109 ksi).
Which is cheaper, A2 or L7?
L7 is the lower-cost material: it sits in the standard tier ($$) while A2 is premium ($$$). Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
Which welds better, A2 or L7?
A2. Its weldability rates poor (20/100) against poor (15/100) for L7.
Ready to make it?
Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in A2 and L7 side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.
