Steel 1038-HR vs 1038-IH

Steel · 1038 temper comparison

1038-HR and 1038-IH are two conditions of the same steel grade, 1038: HR (hot rolled) versus IH (induction hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. 1038-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 400 MPa (58 ksi) against 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) for 1038-HR, about 40% more; tensile strength follows at 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) vs 515 MPa (74.7 ksi). In exchange, 1038-HR is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 18% for 1038-IH, and 1038-IH is harder (183 HB vs 149 HB). 1038-HR runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, 1038-HR machines more easily (good vs poor) and 1038-HR welds better (fair vs poor).

1038-HR vs 1038-IH — frequently asked

Is 1038-IH stronger than 1038-HR?

Yes. 1038-IH has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) against 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) for 1038-HR — about 40% more. Tensile strength is 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) vs 515 MPa (74.7 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or IH?

CD is the default 1038 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither HR nor IH). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, 1038-HR or 1038-IH?

1038-HR. Its machinability rates good (58/100) against poor (15/100) for 1038-IH; for welding the order is 1038-HR first (fair, 52/100) then 1038-IH (poor, 20/100).
