Steel 08F Carburized vs 08F-CD
Steel · 08F temper comparison
08F Carburized and 08F-CD are two conditions of the same steel grade, 08F: Carburized (carburized and hardened) versus CD (cold drawn). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. 08F-CD is the stronger of the two: yield strength 370 MPa (53.7 ksi) against 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) for 08F Carburized, about 16% more. 08F-CD is the more ductile: elongation 15% versus 12% for 08F Carburized, and 08F Carburized is harder (610 HB vs 140 HB). 08F-CD runs hotter in service (300°C vs 180°C continuous) and 08F-CD conducts heat better (58 W/m·K vs 50 W/m·K). On the shop floor, 08F-CD machines more easily (good vs poor) and 08F-CD welds better (excellent vs poor).
08F-CDChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded.
08F Carburized vs 08F-CD: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

08F Carburized vs 08F-CD — frequently asked
Is 08F-CD stronger than 08F Carburized?
Yes. 08F-CD has a typical yield strength of 370 MPa (53.7 ksi) against 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) for 08F Carburized — about 16% more. Tensile strength is 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) vs 500 MPa (72.5 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Carburized or CD?
CR-Annealed is the default 08F condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither Carburized nor CD). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, 08F Carburized or 08F-CD?
08F-CD. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against poor (15/100) for 08F Carburized; for welding the order is 08F-CD first (excellent, 90/100) then 08F Carburized (poor, 25/100).
