Stainless Steel SUH4-HR vs SUH4-QT

Stainless Steel · SUH4 temper comparison

SUH4-HR and SUH4-QT are two conditions of the same stainless steel grade, SUH4: HR (hot rolled) versus QT (quenched and tempered). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. SUH4-HR is the stronger of the two: tensile strength 1,050 MPa (152 ksi) against 950 MPa (138 ksi) for SUH4-QT, about 11% more. In exchange, SUH4-QT is the more ductile: elongation 12% versus 8% for SUH4-HR, and SUH4-HR is harder (340 HB vs 300 HB). SUH4-QT runs hotter in service (800°C vs 650°C continuous).

SUH4-HRChoose it when strength drives the design.

SUH4-QTChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

SUH4-HR vs SUH4-QT — frequently asked

Is SUH4-HR stronger than SUH4-QT?

Yes. SUH4-HR has a typical tensile strength of 1,050 MPa (152 ksi) against 950 MPa (138 ksi) for SUH4-QT — about 11% more.

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or QT?

QT is the default SUH4 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which welds better, SUH4-HR or SUH4-QT?

SUH4-QT. Its weldability rates poor (20/100) against poor (15/100) for SUH4-HR.
