Magnesium Alloy ZM10-T1 vs ZM10-T4

Magnesium Alloy · ZM10 temper comparison

ZM10-T1 and ZM10-T4 are two conditions of the same magnesium alloy grade, ZM10: T1 (cooled from hot working and naturally aged) versus T4 (solution heat treated and naturally aged). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. ZM10-T1 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 115 MPa (16.7 ksi) against 95 MPa (13.8 ksi) for ZM10-T4, about 21% more. In exchange, ZM10-T4 is the more ductile: elongation 7% versus 1.5% for ZM10-T1, and ZM10-T1 is harder (75 HB vs 63 HB). ZM10-T1 conducts heat better (76 W/m·K vs 66 W/m·K).

ZM10-T1 vs ZM10-T4 — frequently asked

Is ZM10-T1 stronger than ZM10-T4?

Yes. ZM10-T1 has a typical yield strength of 115 MPa (16.7 ksi) against 95 MPa (13.8 ksi) for ZM10-T4 — about 21% more. Tensile strength is 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) vs 255 MPa (37 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, T1 or T4?

T6 is the default ZM10 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither T1 nor T4). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

When should I choose ZM10-T1 over ZM10-T4?

Pick ZM10-T1 when strength drives the design. Pick ZM10-T4 when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded.
